Students from the East Union Primary building will be moving to a new addition at the middle/high school once a $5.1 million project is completed. Plans, which include additional classrooms for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade children and a multipurpose building/gymnasium, were revealed to the public Jan. 28.

AFTON — What will $5.1 million buy in today’s economy?

That’s what those in the East Union School District are finding out as the design process begins on an addition to the middle/high school building in Afton.

About 30 people gathered in East Union’s auditorium Thursday night to see initial plans for the project, which is expected to include an addition housing first- through fifth-grade students and multipurpose building/gymnasium.

The project was initiated after a state fire marshal’s inspection listed multiple fire-safety issues at the primary building last fall. Also, school officials had concerns about the handicap accessibility there. Upon project completion, the primary building will be closed.
