GRIMES — The Nodaway Valley cross country teams jumped right into the fire to begin the season, at a very tough Dallas Center-Grimes Invitational Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolverine girls' squad, the defending Class 1A state champions and ranked third in the preseason, finished eighth out of 11 scoring squads.

Unranked DC-G won its own team title, followed by Class 2A No. 13 North Polk, 3A No. 13 Ballard and 1A No. 9 Panorama.

The Fillies were led by freshman standout Madison Waymire, who won the race by more than a minute over 3A 20th-ranked Megan Patava of Norwalk.

Susan Herr, ranked sixth in 1A, led Nodaway Valley with a sixth-place clocking of 17-minutes 59-seconds. Bethni Johnson also grabbed a top-30 finish for the Wolverines, with a 28th-place time of 18:58.
