Taking Initiative

AFTON — East Union School District’s decision to purchase Apple MacBooks for all high school students as a tool to “improve his/her education” is a bold reminder that traditional teaching may slowly be fading.
Those heavy textbooks, needed to be covered with brown paper bags, and wooden, yellow No. 2 pencils could eventually be replaced with sleek portable laptops and adolescent typing strokes.
Monday, the EU school district introduced parents to their “Soaring to New Heights” 1 to 1 laptop program.
Parents of East Union high school students attended a 90-minute mandatory boot camp Monday evening.
“Kids don’t communicate the way we did 20 to 30 years ago; kids are hard wired to technology. Many schools we’ve contacted said they’ve had success with the program,” said East Union Superintendent Dr. Pam Vogel. “They’ve said if the technology is used correctly, students stay engaged in school.”
About 135 MacBooks were purchased by East Union for the initiative.
