I think we’re making up for the last few winters

Here we are in mid-January and we haven’t had to overwork our snowblowers this year. But, in my way of thinking, we deserve a warm winter after the past four or five we have had to endure. We’ve had more than our share of snow and cold over the last few years, we need to average it out someway.
Of course, we still have about 10weeks of winter left on the calendar and you never know, we could make up for the first half in pretty short order if Mother Nature decides to kick in. A lot of the Midwest is devoid of snow this year, which may not help the crops out this spring if they are looking for a little moisture to get them started.
According to the weather folks I listen to, we may be in for a turn around come May with the weather pattern going from dry to wet in less than one month, like they say “If you don’t like the weather right now, just wait a few minutes!”
Taxes
You should feel kind of honored tax day is not April 15 this year. April 15 is a Sunday so you don’t have to have your money in that day. Monday the 16th is something called Emancipation Day, which is some kind of federal holiday in Washington, so the IRS is not open that day. So April 17 will be the official last day to get your return into the IRS unless of course you file an extension.
You can start e-filing your return as early as next Tuesday, Jan. 17 if you are in a hurry to get your refund back. The IRS is looking for more than 140 million returns this year.
Foghat
After last summers successful Marshall Tucker concert in McKinley Park, the Parks Board is going all out with another great “Fossil Rock” group in Foghat. Foghat’s most famous song is “Slow Ride.” The concert is slated for June 23 and should be a great time.
Super Bowl
It has been a banner year for NBC with all their Super Bowl ads sold out for the Feb. 5 game. The 30-second spots are going for almost $4 million each. As usual, the beverage and snack category will be well represented.
Bowling
Speaking of bowling, the annual McKinley Park bowling tournament will be held on Jan. 28. If you have interest in participating and having a team, you can contact Mark Huff with the city of Creston. Their number is 782-2000 ext. 2.
Monday
Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day. The federal holiday gives some of the people the day off that haven’t had one since the Jan. 2 holiday! That was only two weeks ago if you’re counting.
School starts
SWCC is back in session Monday. The local college has been on break since before Christmas.
White Bread
I read where the consumption of white bread is now down to 36 percent. Back in 2000, 54 percent of bread that was eaten was of the white variety. Today 54 percent of the bread that is eaten is of the wheat variety. Your doctor likes you eating those whole grains!
Buzz score
The current top five strongest brand identities are in order: No. 5 Cheerios, No. 4 Google, No. 3 The History Channel, No. 2 Amazon and No. 1 is Subway. Of course, there seems to be a Subway just about every place you look anymore.
