They’re best known for their musical hits “Slow Ride” and “Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool).” They are a British rock band, known for their “boogie rock” sound, who have produced seven gold albums and eight total hits on Billboard’s Top 100 during the mid- to late-1970s.
They are Foghat, and they are headlining the sixth annual Party in McKinley Park June 23.
“They are a name we’ve talked about in year’s past,” said John Kawa, chairman of the Park and Recreation Board. “But, a lot of times it comes down to availability, and we were lucky enough this year they were touring in the United States. We’re excited. They’re a band people will know. They have eight or so hits people will recognize.”
Foghat signed a contract Friday, Kawa said, and has already added Party in the Park to its calendar on the band’s official website. The band is slated to play from 9 p.m. to midnight June 23.
Tickets for Party in the Park, featuring Foghat, will be $15 in advance and $20 at the door. All event proceeds are used directly for the restoration of McKinley Park.
Advanced tickets will be available starting March 1 at Creston Hy-Vee, Creston News Advertiser, Stalker Chevrolet, Lynn’s Sinclair in Mount Ayr, Creston Walmart or from any Creston Park and Recreation board member.
Last year, more than 3,000 people from across the state of Iowa and some from out of state filled McKinley Park to see Marshall Tucker Band.
Early days
The original members of Foghat formed in 1971 and included lead singer and rhythm guitarist Dave Peverett, lead guitarist Rod Price, bassist Tony Stevens and drummer Roger Earl. The band’s top singles are “Slow Ride,” “Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool)” and “Drivin’ Wheel.”
“Slow Ride” was their highest-ranking single. It reached No. 20 on the U.S. Billboard charts in 1975. The band touring today still has Earl, and he has surrounded himself with vocalist Charlie Huhn and musicians Bryan Bassett and Craig MacGregor.
Supporting acts
Templeton Fade, formerly Barcode, will open this year’s Party in the Park. The band is led by local musicians Todd Kinkade and Mike Meek. They will play original rock songs and modern rock covers of Chevelle, Collective Soul, Bad Company, new Lynyrd Skynyrd and Seven Mary Three.
Bright Giant, formerly known as the Josh Davis Band, performed in the inaugural Party in the Park and returns this year. Davis, from Ankeny, is the lead singer and vocalist and has added musicians Noah Mass, Justin Goes and Will Locker. Bright Giant considers themselves Indie rock with influence such as The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Led Zeppelin.
KGGO’s Round Guy will not make his third appearance at Party in the Park.

Bright Giant, formerly known as the Josh Davis Band, DOES NOT return this year. The actual band that will be performing is Beau Nystrom and the Douglas Acres Band with former members of the Jason Brown Band. They are an original country rock band. Playing a mix of southern country rock, country covers and catchy original music. |
