One week until the groundhog gets involved in winter

Next Thursday is Groundhog Day. This has been one winter even the groundhog can’t prolong for too much longer. It has been so nice that even if the “overgrown rodent” does see his shadow, we should still be in good shape.

With no snow cover this year, the ground is still not even frozen. The 40 degree days almost feel good enough to play golf or you don’t mind even being outdoors.

I may be part of the reason we don’t have much snow this year. I bought a new snow blower last November in order to keep my deck cleared off, and as of yet, I haven’t even started the darn thing! It may have been a waste of money, but the nice weather is sure a great benefit if it helped scare the snow away.

Politicians

Saturday is the first Creston Chamber of Commerce legislative coffee.

The coffee has changed locations this year and will be at the multi-purpose room at the YMCA/Southwestern Adult and Continuing Education building. The event starts at 8 a.m. and features all of our local districts state representatives.

If you want to catch up on what is going on in Des Moines, here is your chance to ask questions and hopefully get a few answers.

Parks fun

The local Creston Parks Board has a full calendar of entertainment lined up. This weekend is the annual McKinley Park bowling tournament. The nine-pin event is always a good time and there are about 45 teams participating in the event.

The parks and rec group also has a comedy night with a smoked prime rib dinner coming up March 3.

On June 23, the annual concert in McKinley Park will feature the group Foghat.

All the proceeds of these events go to park improvements. The intent is to be able to someday get the McKinley Park Lake dredged out.

Super Bowl

Now that we have the two teams for this year’s Super Bowl, let the debate begin. New York against Boston!

I’ve always liked the New England Patriots and will cheer for them to beat up the New York Giants.
