The snowman cometh!

We finally got that large amount of snow we have been waiting to see over the past two months of this winter.
As far as I’m concerned, February is a good time to have a snow like that. We should be on the downhill side of winter at this point.
I would think most of the farmers are pretty happy to see the snow with such good moisture content. A lot of the areas around the state were getting pretty dry, and seeing grass fires in January is not a very good sign for the coming summer.
Now let’s just hope the rest of winter is as good as the first half of the winter. The ice fishermen may not like it, but the majority of us don’t mind.
Awards
The Creston News Advertiser won some nice awards at the Iowa Newspaper Association meeting last week. We are blessed to have many good employees who do a great job on our small-town newspaper.
The awards are nice, but our main mission will always be to cover south-central Iowa the best that we can.
Congrats to all of the New Advertiser staff, and thank you to all of our readers and business partners for making the Creston News Advertiser a success. It “takes a village to make a good newspaper.”
Valentines
Tuesday is Valentine’s Day.
I would bet this weekend there will be a lot of celebrating the holiday. The local restaurants, flower shops and retail stores should be busy this weekend. There’s never a lack of things to buy your loved one.
My wife asked for a new camera for Valentine’s Day. Her old one bit the dust, and when you are a deluxe scrapbooker like my wife, you have to have a camera to keep those pictures coming for the next scrapbook.
Presidents Day
Monday Feb. 20 is Presidents Day. The annual holiday (for some) is a good time for many to get their taxes done.
I think Abe Lincoln and George Washington would be pretty surprised at all the taxes now levied on the “common folk.”
I understand a lot of people already have their taxes done and have already gotten their refund spent. I’m still waiting on a couple of forms before I can get mine done.
Comedy
The Creston Parks Department is having a dinner and comedy show on March 3. Tickets are $25 for the smoked prime rib dinner and two comedians.
As usual, the proceeds go to help improve the local parks. You can have a nice night out and good deal to boot!
You can purchase tickets here at the Creston News Advertiser. Don’t wait too long, they seem to be going pretty fast and there is limited seating.
Everybody needs a little humor now and then.
Sports
The regular season of the winter sports season is coming to a close and the tournaments will be starting as of next week. Hopefully, we can get a number of local area teams to the state tournament.
GRMC
Greater Regional Medical Center is moving right along on their new buildings.
I understand the new surgery center is close to complete and the rehab department is getting close to being finished once the new rehab pool gets put in place.
I hear the new orthopedic surgeons are starting to get a number of patients coming in and have been busy with other wintertime injuries.
Thought for the week: I’ve learned ... that being kind is more important than being right. — Andy Rooney
