Crest Area for Life
Crest Area for LIFE met Aug. 28 at Holy Spirit hall. President Rich Madison opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer. Nine members were in attendance.
Terry Madison read the secretary's report from June, and it was approved.
Pat Pokorny gave the treasurer's report. It was approved.
Betty Baker sent 13 congratulatory cards in June and July and 19 in August, plus one sympathy card.
Under politics, pro-life candidates were discussed.
Under old business, Dick and Betty Baker were thanked for driving in both parades.
Under new business, a letter was received inviting the group to the SWCC community awareness day Wednesday. Betty Baker, Pat Pokorny and Rich Madison will man the booth.
The annual meeting will be Oct. 23. The business meeting will be at 7 p.m. and the program at 7:30 p.m. The video "Life after Abortion" will be shown. Rich Madison will get the newsletter out. The nominating committee is Rich Madison and Meg Crawford.
The next meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Holy Spirit hall.

DAR
Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution met Aug. 11 at The Pizza Ranch.
Barb Halpin, Iowa state regent, was a guest of the group. Halpin's theme as regent is to increase membership. Her project is to repair the lay lights on the ceiling in the library at Constitution Hall. There are 25 of them in the library. It costs $40,000 to repair one. Her project for Iowa is to raise money to repair 12 sconces and lay lights. One of her goals as regent is to have the chapters in the state work to follow protocol. She discussed building an app which will help complete the lineage of a prospective member more easily. There was a webinar Aug. 14 on the members website to teach members about building an app.
Jeannette Shannon, a state officer, suggested money for the lay light project be sent to the state treasurer so our state gets credit for it. She mentioned the regent's table at the state conference. Gently-used items are placed on this table, and money raised will go to the state regent's project.
Pam Marvin, state historian, asked every chapter historian to check on ISDAR markers in their community and check on the condition of them.
Chapter members shared in reading the ritual.
Cheryl Micetich shared the national defense report. Every school that receives federal funding should teach students on Sept. 17, Constitution Day, about the United States Constitution.
Laura Guhse presented the president general's message. The president general felt the DAR chapters should help to initiate programs in schools emphasizing patriotism.
Roll call was shared by the members present. They shared a home remedy.
Jane Briley read the minutes. The minutes were approved as written.
The treasurer's report was presented by Bonnie Riepe.
Riepe reported on the new history essay topics.
Dorothy Hughes shared the Indian moment. She reported Cindy Carter of Monroe is the eighth great-granddaughter of Pocohontas.
The commemorative moment was shared. This day is the anniversary of the riot at Watts in Los Angeles.
The conservation moment was shared by Hazel Braby. An average car gets more than 32 miles per gallon. Hybrid cars get better gas mileage.
DAR set Sept. 17 through 23 to celebrate Constitution Week and was made official by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The woman's issue moment was get a flu shot.
Marjorie Kinkade shared the sunshine report.
Dorothy Hughes, as a member of the project committee, announced Christmas cards for soldiers need to be brought to meeting so they can be sent.
Marjorie Kinkade will add a protocol moment and state bylaws moment to the meeting.
Connie Kinkade read the awards Nancy McKay Chapter received at the state conference. Merle South, Marjorie Kinkade and Pam Marvin received separate awards.
Marvin shared about the board of management meeting. The meeting had good attendance. Bonnie Riepe also shared. She met many of the state officers that she will deal with as treasurer and history essay committee chairperson.
A veteran of Mount Ayr is in hospice, and Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter was invited to help with a special veterans program to honor him Aug. 17.
The southwest district meeting Sept. 18 will be in Glidden.
The group voted to accept Deb Richardson and Jennifer Queener as members. Riepe made the motion, and Aleda Kelgren seconded that motion. The motion carried.
The next meeting will be Saturday at the Richardson meeting room at Greater Regional Medical Center. Marj Kinkade will be presenting the program,"Women's Suffrage." The
refreshment committee will be Lynn Schlaht, Clarisse Minnick and Judith Wachter.

American Legion Auxiliary
The regular meeting of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 70 was held Aug. 9 with Darla Shallenberger presiding. Six members attended.
Officers for the 2012-13 year are President Daria Shallenberger; Vice President Tammy Munson; Secretary/Treasurer Lois Smith; Historian/Membership Beth Fry; Chaplain Cathy Scadden; and Sergeant At Arms Rebecca Colburn.
The SWCC scholarship committee includes Mary Bond, Cathy Scadden and Rebecca Colburn. They will decide who the recipient of the $500 scholarship will be and report at the September meeting.
Shallenberger talked to Jane Brown of the Park and Recreation Board about placing a bench at McKinley Lake as a memorial to Sally Vicker. Members will be following up on information during the coming month.
A suggestion was made about possibly changing meeting dates and times. It was decided to bring the discussion back up at the November meeting.
The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Thursday.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday.
Canasta winners were Mary Kline, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Wanda Nash, third.
Loretta Kelly won the door prize.
Kelly will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Sept. 12.
