Panthers beat Harlan second straight year, tied for first; Mount Ayr leads district
The Creston/O-M Panthers jumped back into a first-place tie in Class 3A District 1 with an historic 34-14 homecoming victory over Harlan Friday night.
With ADM's 28-27 loss to Atlantic, the top of District 1 now has a four-team logjam at the top — Creston/O-M, Harlan, Lewis Central and ADM — all with one loss. ADM and Creston/O-M are each 3-1 in district play, while Harlan and LC are 2-1.
Creston/O-M, which took a 13-0 lead on two early Harlan turnovers, trailed 14-13 at halftime, but dominated play in the final two periods. Tailback Bryce McIlravy had 100 yards rushing in the second half as the Panther ground game chewed up first downs and the clock in a 14-0 fourth quarter.
Harlan's pass-oriented offense was disrupted by the Panthers' pass rush and three interceptions by Panthers Brandon Phipps, Briar Evans and Luke Neitzel.
Quarterback Luke Neitzel had three rushing touchdowns. McIlravy had a 7-yard TD run and Brandon Phipps returned his interception 87 yards for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.
Neitzel finished with 130 yards rushing and McIlravy had 129, including 88 in the fourth quarter. Harlan quarterback Adam Juhl passed for 218 yards, but the Cyclones had no yards rushing in the fourth quarter.
Creston/O-M travels next week to Glenwood, a 35-15 winner over Sergeant Bluff-Luton in non-district play Friday.
Mount Ayr leads district
MOUNT AYR — The Mount Ayr Raiders overcame an early 7-0 deficit en route to a 25-13 homecoming victory over Van Meter here Friday night.
The Raiders improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Class 1A District 7, while Van Meter falls to 4-2 and 3-1.
For the second straight week, a special teams played helped ignite the Raiders. Mount Ayr recovered a fumble on a punt that helped spark the offense.
It was another physical performance by the Raiders' defense, which gave Van Meter's high-powered passing offense trouble in the second half.
With the win over Van Meter, and Pella Christian's 28-14 loss to Ogden Friday night, the Raiders sit alone atop District 7.
Mount Ayr hosts Central Decatur next week.
