Creston boys win NV Invite, girls second
GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley took the first two spots in the individual race of the Nodaway Valley Invite here Monday, but the Creston boys team did something it hadn’t done in head coach Pat Schlapia’s 23 years as coach of the team — winning the team title at the same meet in back-to-back years.
Creston beat out Nodaway Valley for the team title, 59-86. The Creston girls finished second behind Class 1A No. 1-ranked Griswold.
“Outstanding night for both squads,” Schlapia said. “Our boys won it last year, and that broke a drought from over 20 years, and it was just kind of like why not repeat? They had a total team effort with that. They were focused and very determined with that.”
All five scoring members of the boys team finished in the top 20, earning medals. Sophomore Jay Wolfe led the way, finishing third overall in 18:11 while sophomore Brant Hudson stepped up into the two-spot, running 18:38 for ninth place.
“Brant Hudson ran his best race of the season,” Schlapia said. “We’ve been challenging him to step up and he did.”
Kaleb Cook finished 14th in 19:06, Garret Taylor came across in 15th at 19:07 and Kruz Adamson finished 18th in 19:14.
Zack Peppmeier and Travis Miller were also a part of the winning varsity team, finishing 22nd and 35th, respectively.
“It was nice they weren’t too far off of Kruz,” Schlapia said. “This is probably the hilliest course we’ll see all season. It was hilly and windy for everybody involved.”
Nodaway Valley went one-two individually, with senior Colton Graham taking the individual crown in 17:49 and freshman Timmy Settlemoir following in 18:09.
Girls
Griswold edged out Creston for the girls team title, 40-60. Six of the seven Creston varsity girls placed in the top 20.
Sophomore Maria Mostek led the way in fourth place at 15:38, finishing behind Griswold state champion Rebekah Topham, teammate Jordyn Sindt and Corning’s Tiffany Shepherd, who finished third in 15:35.
Senior Emily Wignall finished eighth in 16:33. Taylor Briley (14th), Maddie Skarda (16th) and Jessica Beatty (20th) rounded out the team scoring for the Panthers.
“With the girls, we knew it was going to be competitive, too,” Schlapia said. “Griswold and Topham would be one of the top teams in the whole state all classes. We bunched our girls well, but Griswold bunched theirs better than us.”
Madison Hance in 20th and Caitlin McIlravy in 30th also competed in the varsity race for Creston.
It marked the second straight year the Panther girls have finished second at this meet, and the third straight meet this season they have finished second in the team standings.
JV
Creston took the top two spots individually in both the boys and girls junior varsity races.
Taylor Hudson and Katie Stevens took the top spots in the girls race, running 18:15 and 18:17, respectively.
Five other girls — Savannah Hartman, Amber Castillo, Ann Waigand, Kelsey Donner and Jenna Hayes — finished in the top 10 of the JV girls race.
Senior Jacob Wolfe won the boys JV race in 20:31 while Evan Nielsen took second in 20:50. Michael Walsh also finished in the top 10, placing eighth in 22:16.
“We had 20 kids that ran here last year, and all 20 kids improved their times,” Schlapia said. “We had some improve by 30 seconds, all the way to some kids improved their times by four to six minutes.”
Area results
The Corning girls finished third in the team standings, with 102 points. Shepherd finished third overall, while Steph Shuler finished 11th and Taylor Gaule finished 17th.
Nodaway Valley freshman Destiny Scar finished fifth overall.
Adrian Richards of Mount Ayr finished 15th overall. Morgan James finished 26th for Orient-Macksburg.
The Nodaway Valley boys were led by Graham and Settlemoir running first and second, and junior TJ Bower finishing 16th.
The Corning boys finished fifth in the team standings with 134 points. Garrett Newton finished sixth overall and Lane Peterson finished 17th for the Red Raiders.
Taylor Richie finished 19th overall for Mount Ayr. Jacob Caviness finished 52nd, leading Orient-Macksburg.
State qualifying meets
Creston will travel to Atlantic on Oct. 20 for its Class 3A state qualifying meet, competing against ADM, Atlantic, Ballard, Boone, Dallas Center-Grimes, Glenwood, Harlan, Norwalk, Perry, Saydell, Shenandoah/Essex and Winterset for spots in the state meet.
Corning, Mount Ayr, Nodaway Valley and Orient-Macksburg will also travel to Atlantic on Oct. 20 for the Class 1A state qualifying meet.
