Southwestern Community College’s volleyball team got back on the winning track at home Monday, defeating Graceland JV 20-25, 26-24, 15-10 before sweeping Waldorf College JV, 25-17, 25-10, 25-9.

After losing the first set against Graceland, the Spartans (16-7) never dropped another one.

“We started off kind of slow,” coach Melissa Blessington said. “We had a few days off from our last match (conference loss to Iowa Central) and we just needed to get ourselves back in competition mode. It was good to see the team battle back for the win.”

Mel Mangrum hit eight kills in the match. Ashley Strong had seven kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Mangrum and Lily Lower each smacked eight kills in the victory over Waldorf to close out the night. Mangrum also had four blocks and Strong again led the defense with 11 digs. Molly Schimp finished with 48 assists for kills for the night.

“It was another good win for our team,” Blessington said. “Hopefully these two wins will give us the needed momentum against Marshalltown Wednesday. We are playing really great volleyball and this is a great time of the year to be doing just that.”

The Spartans travel to Marshalltown (6-15) for a 7 p.m. match Wednesday.
