P.E.O. Chapter AZ
On Oct. 2, Mindy Dresback was hostess for Chapter AZ P.E.O. at her home. Dora Coen was co-hostess. Nineteen members were present. Lela Burkhalter was initiated as a new member.
Yearbook chairperson Shirley Ide told the group the next meeting will be a social 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Upper Crust Culinary Creations. Members should bring a picture of their family.
President Karla Hynes said the P.E.O. Star Scholarship is available to a high school senior woman to attend an accredited college. The award is for $2,500.
Christy Whited and Mindy Dresback asked members to vote in the Dream Big Grow Here contest on Facebook. Adams Street Espresso and Upper Crust Culinary Creations are both in the south central Iowa area contest to win $5,000.
Catholic Daughters
Catholic Daughters of the Americas met Sept. 11 at Holy Spirit Parish Hall.
The Rosary was led by Regent Betty Baker and Teresa Weis.
Lunch was then served by a committee consisting of Betty Baker, Teresa Weis, Pat Wagner, Retta Ripperger and Carolyn Downing.
A prayer was led followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Minutes were read and approved.
Treasurer’s report was read and approved.
A thank you was read by Pat Wagner from Rural Crisis Center and Betty Baker for the flowers she received at Ladies Night Out.
National CD of A is Sunday. All CD of A members will sit up front as a group.
Suggestions for programs for upcoming meetings were asked for and recognized.
Volunteers are needed for the next meeting for an audit. Carol McKee, Jane Collins and Pat Pokorny all volunteered to do this audit.
The new national chaplain is the Rev. Steven D. Gosnell from the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
The national convention in Omaha was a success. A large donation was given to Boys Town.
March for Life will be June 25, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
A list of new CD of A articles are now for sale. Regent Baker passed around a flyer if anyone is interested in purchasing something.
Baker then passed out a matching game called “Regarding Your Health.” Winners were Anita Studer, Jane Collins and Past Pokorny.
The half and half was won by Teresa Weis.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Oct. 3.
Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Marilyn Larimore, second; and Janet Kessler, third.
Marilyn Larimore won the door prize.
Larimore hosted cards and chatter Wednesday.
DAR
Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution met 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at Greater Regional Medical Center.
Women Suffrage was the topic of the program presented by Marjorie Kinkade.
The meeting was called to order by Connie Kinkade, chapter regent. Members shared in reading the ritual.
Jan Morgan shared the president general’s message. The president general reminded members of the change in deadline dates this year. She also mentioned that members should follow up why an active member resigns from the organization to ascertain if they need assistance to remain a member.
Aleda Kelgren shared information about the state regent’s project and discussed ways members could help raise money for the project, which is restoring a lay light in DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. For more information, go to http://www.dar.org/giving_site/lay_lights_webinar.cfm.
Cheryl Micetich shared the national defense report. DAR established the National Defense Committee in 1926 to promote and enlighten public opinion.
Roll call was answered by 16 members by sharing a voting experience.
Bonnie Riepe shared the treasurer’s report. Jane Briley read the minutes. The minutes were corrected and accepted as corrected.
Pam Marvin shared protocol. When doing the Pledge of Allegiance, they should not be holding anything and your free hand should be straight down.
Hazel Braby shared the Conservation moment. She shared we must remember that excessive packaging makes up much of our waste.
Judith Wachter shared the Indian moment. She shared two institutions that DAR supports.
Laura Guhse shared about Constitution Week, Sept. 17 through 23.
The flag moment was given by Darlene Morgan.
Marjorie Kinkade shared the sunshine report. Hazel Braby fell after the last meeting. Marjorie sent her a card.
Pam Marvin explained the American History Teacher Program, which honors teachers of social studies in grades 5-12.
Jan Morgan shared that she has contacted guidance counselors about the Good Citizen contest for high school students.
The roll call next month will be, “Where would you like to cruise?” Pam Marvin, Charottle Assell and Suzanne Frost will serve refreshments. The program next month will be Four Ladies’ Journey to America in 1620 by Lynne Schlaht, Bonnie Riepe, Elaine Brown and Connie Kinkade.
Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 28 members and two guests.
Brad Lorenzen president, presided. Steve Bolie gave the prayer, and Jane Lowe was finemaster.
The program was Jackie Steffan, director of Creston YMCA, who showed pictures and gave updates of all the repairs and upgrades being done at the Y since the tornado in April.
Karen Finn, widow of Kiwanis member Mickey Finn, presented the club with $500 to add to the club’s Mickey Finn Scholarship fund that goes to students from area high schools who go to SWCC each year.
The Kiwanis coat drive is 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Methodist Church, 400 N. Elm St. The club is accepting new and coats in good condition at Hometown Insurance, Petznick’s and Casey’s South.
The club will also be selling live Christmas wreaths in two sizes and a swag as a fundraiser with delivery before Thanksgiving, contact any member for information, deadline to order will be Nov. 6.
TOPS
TOPS 1338 met 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Methodist Church. Eight members weighed in with Monica Belew as the best loser. Monthly best loser was Carol Sheldahl and Neoma Davis as runner-up.
Diana Loomis opened the business meeting with the TOPS pledge. Minutes were read and approved, and the treasurer’s report was given. The fall rally will be held Oct. 27 at Staves Memorial Methodist Church in Des Moines. “Sqaures” were won by Loomis.
Jane King gave the program titled “Lettuce Learn.” This was a study of the various kinds of lettuce.
The Red Can Challenge is to write a note telling what one admires about that person.
On Oct. 8, TOPS 1338 met with 10 members weighing in. The best loser was Marisue Lewis and Anna Thompson was the runner-up.
The program was presented by Alice Brown. She read a poem called “The Ultimate Goal,” regarding attitudes one has toward weight and relationships.
Loomis presided over the business meeting. She and King will be attending the fall rally later this month. The Diet-O contest continues. Lewis was the winner of “Squares” and Belew was the winner of the fines.
Next week’s program will be given by Davis.
The Red Can Challenge is to dress with care because when you look good, you feel good.
