Mike Rice — Lenox

Mike Rice, 93, of Lenox died Oct. 7, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Lenox Presbyterian Church. Interment with military rites accorded by Parkinson American Legion Post No. 250 will be in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, 124 S. Main St., Lenox. Memorials may be directed to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. Lewis “Mike” Rice, son of Minnie (Minnick) and Douglas Rice, was born June 17, 1919, in rural Mount Ayr.

Mike grew up attending several country schools and graduated from Diagonal High School in 1938.

Mike served in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps as a medic.

He was a farmer all of his life and spent the past 64 years on his farm four and a-half miles south of Lenox.

On Nov. 24, 1946, Mike married Daisy Huntsman. Eighteen years later, she died.

On Oct. 29, 1995, Mike married Leola “Peg” Huntsman Kountz.

Mike is survived by his second wife Peg; children, Jim (wife Linda) Rice, Joy (husband Harlan) Miller and Bev (husband Kevin) Freshour, all of Lenox; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Brooks of Kenwick, Wash., Charlotte (husband Dwight) Cunning of Mount Ayr and Jorene (husband Bill) Blevins of Springfield, Mo.; many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his first wife in 1981, Mike was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul Rice and sister-in-law Sadie Rice, sister Opal and brother-in-law Bill Goodale, brother-in-law Max Brooks, great-granddaughter Macy Miller and many other relatives and friends.
