RED OAK — Creston freshmen avenged earlier losses to Harlan and Carroll Kuemper Catholic on their way to winning the championship of the Red Oak Tournament Saturday.

Besides beating those two conference rivals, 2-1, during round-robin competition, the Panthers lost to Glenwood, 2-0.

The Panthers advanced as pool champions, however, along with Kuemper and Red Oak and Dension-Schleswig from the opposite pool.

Creston swept Denison in the semifinals before knocking off Kuemper again in the title match, 25-16, 25-19.

“The kids really played great,” coach Mike McCabe said. “The pool play win over Kuemper after dropping game one was the turnaround. We really played well and with great energy the rest of the day.”

Sydney Dunphy and Alli Thomsen represented Creston on the all-tournament team. Creston is now 19-5-1 in matches and 49-16 in sets heading into Tuesday’s home action against Clarinda.
