Nodaway Valley 36, Treynor 35

TREYNOR — The Nodaway Valley Wolverines secured their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, pulling out a 36-35 victory in double overtime here on Friday.

Nodaway Valley trailed by scores of 7-0, 7-6 and 14-6, before tying the game up at 14 apiece in the third quarter on a Kain Queck 22-yard touchdown run.

About five minutes later, Nodaway Valley took its first lead of the game on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Brad Baudler to Ryan Williams, putting the Wolverines up 21-14.

Treynor came back to tie the game in the final minute of the third quarter, and the teams played a scoreless fourth quarter.

Treynor struck first in overtime, and added a 2-point conversion to go up 29-21, but Zach Brewer scored a touchdown and Williams added a 2-point conversion to force a second overtime.

In that second overtime, Brewer scored on a 6-yard touchdown run. Head coach Steve Shantz elected to kick an extra point, which Williams made, putting the Wolverines up 36-29.

Treynor answered with a touchdown of its own, but elected to go for the win with a 2-point conversion, which the Wolverines stopped to win the game.

“Zach Brewer made the tackle on the Statue of Liberty play in the second overtime to win the game,” Shantz said. “The entire defense, while giving up big plays and short field on a turnover, played outstanding.”

Nodaway Valley improved to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in Class 1A District 8.

The Wolverines rushed for 279 yards in the game and threw for 150. Brewer racked up 168 yards on the ground for Nodaway Valley.

“We finished today. It was a team effort that overcame special teams miscues and a few big plays,” Shantz said. “It was good for everyone. The players, coaches, school and community. There are still many things to work on, but to overcome four tunrovers and two overtimes was a great game to be a part of.”

Nodaway Valley takes on Council Bluffs St. Albert on Friday.
