Creston now has a second Mexican restaurant offering lunch and supper.
Durango Mexican Restaurant, 211 N. Pine St., located where Charlie's Bar & Grill used to be, opened its doors for business Friday. Owner Alberto Aguirre said has been saving money and renovating the building for the past year in preparation for the opening.
"My biggest motivation in opening this business is my family," Aguirre said. "We want our customers to be our family, too. We want them to come in and feel like we have invited them over to our house for dinner. We want them to enjoy their experience."
Aguirre, who moved eight years ago from Chicago to Creston, currently works full-time at Ferrara Candy Company in Creston. He said Durango Mexican Restaurant has been a dream of his for a long time.
Aguirre said the food at the restaurant is authentic and prepared "from the ground up." He said his restaurant serves all the traditional Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and gorditas, but the restaurant's specialty is a tampiquena.
A tampiquena is made with seasoned flank or skirt steak, which Aguirre said is grilled and served on a whole enchilada.
"Our food is homemade," Aguirre said. "It's not tex mex, it's not imitation Mexican food, it is authentic Mexican food prepared from the ground up whether it be the beans, meat, rice or spices. And, I'm a customer, too, so when you come to my restaurant I will give you plenty of food, that tastes good and will be worth the price."
Hours at Durango Mexican Restaurant are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. They do not currently accept debit or credit cards. They do not currently serve alcohol.
A ribbon cutting for the Durango Mexican Restaurant staff is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
