Creston eighth-graders went 1-8 against Clarinda on Monday.

Clarinda swept Team One, 3-0. Cammy Rutherford served 8-10 with three aces and hit three kills for Creston.

“These girls can play so good together,” coach Jan Lesan said, “and then we are our own worst enemy. They need to stay focused on teamwork.”

Clarinda also swept Team Two, 3-0. Cydney Seley served 8-9 with three aces.

“Individuals played well. We did not play as a team,” Lesan said.

Clarinda beat Team Three 25-22, 26-24 in two tight games before Creston rolled 15-2 in the final set. Jenni Hughes served 18-19 with 13 aces.

“These were great games,” Lesan said. “We just came up a little short. They never quit.”

On Tuesday, Creston hosted Red Oak and won one of six matches.

Red Oak beat Creston Team One in two close sets, 21-17, 22-20. Hannah Hood had three kills and Kristy Powers served 10-10 with three aces.

“These girls lost, but played well,” coach Lesan said. “They need to learn to finish and not allow the other team to come back.”

Red Oak beat Creston Team Two, 21-16, 21-8. Cydney Seley and Jenni Hughes each served five aces.

“We stopped believeing in ourselves and stopped working as a team,” Lesan said.

Team Three split with Red Oak, 21-18, 8-21. Leah Stow served five aces, Matti Wheeler had four and Logan Pettit hit two kills.

“These girls are improving constantly,” Lesan said. “They don’t give up and just keep improving.”
