Rated Bears serve up a sweep
When passing off the serve isn’t sharp, a volleyball team struggles to generate an effective offense.
That was the demise of the Southwestern Spartans at home Wednesday night, as No. 12-rated DMACC swept the Spartans 25-15, 25-19, 25-18.
The first set was even at 9-9, and still close at 14-12 when Alex Duffy blocked a DMACC attack. But, from there, the Bears went on an 11-3 run to close out the set. It was more of the same in sets two and three.
“DMACC is a great team,” SWCC coach Melissa Blessington said. “We struggled on serve receive, but we did have some bright points with our hitting.”
Lily Lower and Duffy each had six kills for the Spartans, but the inconsistency of the offense is evident in only five assists chalked up by setter Molly Schimp. There simply weren’t enough opportunities.
“We did not pass well at all, so then it’s hard to do anything but set our outside,” Blessington said. “Their serving is tough, but we didn’t respond and anticipate. We just weren’t checked in to that part of the game, and that’s uncharacteristic of us. We need to bounce back quickly.”
DMACC now stands 17-6 overall and 3-1 in region play. SWCC, 18-8 and 2-2, has another home match tonight against Wentworth College (Mo.). On Friday and Saturday the Spartans play in the DMACC tournament against North Dakota School of Science and Colby College. Saturday’s opponents are both ranked in the top 15 of the nation — Kishwaukee and Parkalnd, both of Illinois.
