Mary Jo Sedgwick Creston
Mary Jo Sedgwick, 93, of Creston, formerly of Afton, died Oct. 10, 2012, at Crest Haven Care Centre.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. The Rev. Dave Tebbenkamp will officiate. Burial will be in Groesbeck-Ashland Cemetery. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Monday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Brazil Gospel Fellowship Mission. Mary Josephine (Stalcup) Sedgwick, daughter of Ida Jane (Bole) and John Franklin Stalcup, was born April 14, 1919, in Dodge Township in Union County.
Mary Jo graduated from Afton High School in 1936 and Northwestern Bible and Missionary Training School in Minneapolis, Minn.
After one year at home with her parents southeast of Afton, on June 14, 1942, Mary Jo married Max E. Sedgwick at Emmanuel Baptist Church in rural Afton.
The couple lived in Reseda, Calif., where Max pastored a newly organized church for two years.
For 35 years, they served churches in Sebastopol, Oakland and San Leandra area in California. They also worked at the home of peace (missionary home).
Meanwhile, Mary Jo and her husband gained additional Bible and musical training at various schools in the area.
In 1978, they moved to Afton, where he pastored Afton Bible Church until 1985 and Faith Baptist Church until 2000.
Mary Jo played the piano, and continued playing piano and organ at churches, care centers and meal sites.
Mary Jo is survived by her son Daniel Sedgwick of Oroville, Wash.; and Jerry Allen Wilhite, who they also raised; eight grandchildren; and brother Clarence (wife Irene) Stalcup of Murray.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2004; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Harry Bullock and Ruth and Lyle Means; brother and sister-in-law, Bryan and Dora Stalcup and grandson Kenny Sedgwick.
