Red Oak ousts Panthers in Winterset tourney
WINTERSET — Creston went 2-1 in pool play and lost to conference rival Red Oak in the semifinals of the Winterset Volleyball Tournament Saturday.
It was a successful weekend for Creston volleyball, as the Panthers took first place in the Orient-Macksburg JV Tournament. That report will be in Tuesday’s News Advertiser.
Polly Luther, varsity head coach, said the Panthers overcame a slow start to play good volleyball in the later matches, an upgrade from a disppointing loss Tuesday to Clarinda.
Sixth-ranked Nevada beat Creston 21-15, 21-13 in the Panthers’ opening match. Creston then swept Interstate 35, 21-15, 21-8.
“I put a different group of girls in to get a spark, and they did a good job,” Luther said.
The Panthers earned a chance to advance in the tournament by defeating North Union, formerly North Sentral Kossuth, 18-21, 21-9, 15-8.
Red Oak won the opposite pool and eliminated the Panthers in a close match, 19-25, 25-17, 15-13.
“We played well. I was not disappointed,” Luther said. “Our blocking was much better.”
The Panthers (12-12) close the regular season at home Tuesday against Glenwood, with senior night observed prior to the match.
