Who doesn't love Italian food?

Frank and Whitney Nucaro are posing that question this fall.

The couple, married since 2007, plan to open an Italian drive-thru deli called Taste of Italy next month. Taste of Italy will be located at the former Coffee Shack, 101 W. Taylor.

"There's nobody in town serving real Italian food," said co-owner Whitney Nucaro. "My husband is full blown Italian, grew up in the restaurant business and it's been a dream of his for a long time. So, when I heard the Coffee Shack was selling, we jumped on the opportunity."

Whitney said Taste of Italy will have a drive-up breakfast menu Monday through Saturday, which will include coffee, various muffins and cupcakes including Whitney's pancake and bacon cupcakes. Meanwhile, Frank will fix Italian breakfast bowls, which main contents will include scramble eggs, Italian sausage and melted mozzarella cheese.

Taste of Italy will also serve lunch and supper Tuesday through Saturday and Whitney said the menu features her husband's four main traditional Italian sandwiches — chicken parmesan, meatball, grinder and traditional Italian sausage sandwich. Frank said those sandwiches all feature select Italian sausage they purchase from Des Moines.

Frank, who currently works at H&H Commercial and formerly at Bunn-O-Matic, has been making and bringing these Italian sandwiches to work for the past three years and his coworkers "love them" and recommended he open up an Italian deli.

Frank said lunch will also feature homemade Italian pizza at $1.50 per slice. Frank said Taste of Italy will also offer catering once they open.

The Nucaros plan to take possession of the Coffee Shack building this week and have expectations of opening for business in mid-November.
