Charles Calhoun Mount Ayr

Charles Calhoun, 86, of Mount Ayr died Oct. 17, 2012, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.

A celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Skip Rushing will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Open visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Sunday with family present 2 to 4 p.m. at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. A memorial fund has been established in his name to be decided later. Online condolences may be left at www.watsonarmstrongfh.com.

Charles Calhoun, son of Esther Porter and Percy Calhoun, was born March 3, 1926, near Allendale, Mo.

Charles graduated from Sheridan, Mo., High School.

Charles served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946.

On Feb. 1, 1947, Charles married Mary Patricia Guarino in Boston, Mass.

They moved to Mount Ayr in 1953.

Charles was the service manager at Harvey Brothers Motor Company for several years before starting his own construction business doing concrete work.

Charles was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and served on the Mount Ayr City Council.

Charles is survived by his children, Steve (wife Debbie) Calhoun of Denver, Colo., Mark (wife Cindy) Calhoun of Omaha, Neb., Lisa Cooney of Indianola and Laurie (husband Kirk) Greenman of Mount Ayr; son-in-law Terry McGahuey of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Paul (Louise) Calhoun of Atlantic; and sister-in-law Marilyn Calhoun of Grant City, Mo.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife May 20, 2001; daughter Diane McGahuey; brother Jack Calhoun; and sister and brother-in-law, Janice Maxine Eckerle and John.
