National Friends of the Library week is Oct. 21 through 27, and the Creston Friends of the Library Board in Creston has planned a free cookie walk 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The cookie walk will be held at Lincoln School. This is the first time the Creston Friends of the Library Board has put on a cookie walk.

"When you come in, greeters will give you a bag," said Kay Raymond, president of the Creston Friends of the Library Board. "You will then go to 12 different rooms inside Lincoln School, and get 12 different types of cookies. Essentially enough cookies to fill the bag."

While participating in the cookie walk, the public will be able to see renderings from an architect as to what each of those 12 rooms would be if Gibson Memorial Library moved to Lincoln School.

Raymond said the board decided to do a free cookie walk this year because they wanted to give back to the community.

"We are just grateful to the community for all of the support they give us," she said. "If this goes well, we may do it again next year."

During National Friends of the Library week, the Creston Friends of the Library Board will also be giving assorted books to all of the preschools in Creston and Afton.

"Everything we make goes back to the library in some way, shape or form," said Raymond. "Everything we do is for the library."

Other activities

The Creston Friends of the Library Board, along with Humanities Iowa and Southwestern Community College, are sponsoring "A Talk about Buffalo Bill" with Roy R. Behrens. This event will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at the SWCC Performing Arts Center.

Other events and activities the Creston Friends of the Library Board sponsors range from cookie bouquets to book fairs.

"The book fairs are our biggest projects," said Raymond. "We have the Scholastic Book Fair during the Fourth of July, and then we have the used book sale during Balloon Days. We also do things like bring in magicians and ventriloquists in the summer for children."

Raymond said she joined the Creston Friends of the Library Board because she loves the library.

"I really want to support it," she said. "And, so do all of the 'friends,' no matter where it is."
