We recently took a group of our friends to visit Mt. Pisgah. It was a new and amazing experience for them. Many people do not realize the historical significance of that place. It is beautiful and has been well taken care of for many years by Bob Brown. It is on his land, and he takes great pride in showing you around. He gives great tours.

A few years ago, I was part of an 8th grade team who took our students to Mt. Pisgah every year for the history of Union County. The people, who settled there for a very short time, were an important part of settling Union County and Iowa.

When you visit, Bob will show you how to find where cabins, trails, graves, etc. were. There is a large cemetery there, also. He recently had a group of 150 students from Minnesota come to mark out cabins, so that you can see where they were, how close together they were, and how small they were. You can find the spring where they got their water to carry back to their cabin. There is also a full-sized replica of a cabin used by the settlers. You can still find remains of the dugouts they lived in the first year during a very cold winter. Some lived in their wagons.

We are thankful that Bob has taken the time and effort to preserve this important part of Iowa and continues to use it for tourism in Union County. Take time to visit this local treasure.
