Five area runners qualify

ATLANTIC — Tiffany Shepherd highlighted a list of five area cross country runners who advanced from the State Qualifying Meet here Monday, earning trips to the state meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday.
Shepherd became a four-time state meet qualifier. Other qualifiers included Mount Ayr sophomore Adrian Richards and Nodaway Valley freshmen Destiny Scar and Timmy Settlemoir and senior Colton Graham.
With the temperature hitting 70 degrees with a humidity of 89 percent during the Class 1A girls race, many runners dropped out or struggled to get to the finish line. The conditions were about as different as they could be from the weather on Thursday, when the meet was originally scheduled.
The finish line area looked like a war zone with bodies strewn about on the ground following the race.
But Shepherd, Scar and Richards battled the conditions and advanced.
“I wanted to run Thursday to get it out of the way, but it helped me running today to get a better time and everything,” Shepherd said. “Thursday I was really nervous. Today I was nervous, too, but I told myself I can, I can.”
Shepherd, who finished third behind Griswold state champion Rebekah Topham and teammate Jordyn Sindt, received a boost from having her sister Tabitha watching the meet.
“I kind of felt crappy throughout the race, but it was mind over matter, and my sister (Tabitha) was here to tell me that you can, so that really helped me out,” Shepherd said. “This is the second meet this year she’s got to come watch, so it helps so much when she’s here, because she’s gone through everything. She knows how I feel and it helps me to push through the race.”
Scar battled with Shepherd through much of the race, before finishing sixth in 16:23.
Richards, meanwhile, got a better start than she normally does and was able to stay within the top 10 throughout the race.
“She’s run pretty even, so that’s how she ran today,” Mount Ayr coach Deb Larsen said. “She went out probably a little quicker than she normally does, to try and not lose the leaders. Then she just stayed in the seventh to 10th range, then came in strong at the end. I’m really excited for her.”
NV boys
The Nodaway Valley boys team, led by state qualifiers Settlemoir in third place and Graham in ninth place, finished fifth, but just 12 points out of one of the top three team qualifying spots.
Graham had a strong finish to fight back from 11th place to get into the top 10, earning his trip to the state meet. Settlemoir also moved well in the second half of the race, moving up several spots.
Junior TJ Bower, a two-time state meet qualifier, just missed out on qualifying for a third straight year, placing 13th in 18:43.
“We may be the only school in the state to have two freshmen individual qualifiers (Settlemoir and Scar),” NV coach Darrell Burmeister said.
The Class 1A girls race begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The Class 1A boys race begins at 2:30 p.m.
Nodaway Valley senior Julie Bricker, with her 22nd place finish Monday, met all the requirements to be named Academic All-State.
