Highland (Kan.) Community College defeated Southwestern in non-conference volleyball action Friday night, 25-16, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13.
Lily Lower hit 10 kills for the Spartans, now 20-14. Mariah Kruse had a team-high 14 digs.
This was a rough game for us,” said SWCC coach Melissa Blessington. “Highland has a very fast offense and we didn’t start off playing the defense that we normally do. Our girls did step it up in the third game and did get the win, and that was because of the increase in our passing accuracy. It is good for us to play Highland because it will be another team that helps get us ready to play in the ICCAC Showcase next weekend.”
In the two-day event at Marshalltown, Southwestern will have conference matches against Clinton and seventh-ranked Kirkwood on Friday, and Marshalltown and Ellsworth on Saturday.
But before that, the Spartans conclude their home season Wednesday in a 6:30 p.m. match against Grand View JV. Besides honoring the sophomores in their final home appearance, the night will include a ceremony naming the volleyball court “Rita Schroeder Volleyball Court” after the longtime SWCC coach currently serving as an assistant.
Schroeder coached the team from 1984 to 2009, with a record of 705-37 and four national tournament appearances.
