Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza brings a variety of activities

The third annual Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza, sponsored by the Creston News Advertiser, is scheduled Monday at Southwestern Community College. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m.

Activities this year include cooking and decorating demonstrations, tastings, a style show and more. Some of the featured demonstrators include Dennis "kyp" Kuyper, kyp's kitchen in the Creston News Advertiser; Kathy Rieck, Everyday Living Show on KSIB radio; and Katie Routh, chef at Henry A. Wallace Cultural Life Center.

"We used to bring in Taste of Home," said Craig Mittag, advertising director at the Creston News Advertiser. "Those shows were all about cooking, and we thought we could do this ourselves, do it locally, plus add more things."

Over 20 different businesses will have booths set up at the event and sell items, demonstrate different things and give out food samples. Every booth that is set up at the event is required to give a door prize, also.

Something new that is happening this year is a pumpkin decorating contests for the people who set up a booth at the event.

"We asked each booth to decorate a pumpkin, whether it is carving it or just decorating it," said Mittag. "Then they will display their pumpkin at their booth, and the people who come to the show will then pick their favorite pumpkin."

The winning exhibitor will get a free half-page ad in the Creston News Advertiser.

A recipe contest is also held for the event, and this year's theme is candy. The public has been sending in recipes to the Creston News Advertiser, and the staff picks the top 10 recipes. Then, those top 10, will bring samples of that recipe to the Holiday to Holiday Extravaganza to be judged. This year's judges are Cinda Long, Terry Freeman Rieck.

Mittag said if it wasn't for Kuyper, the Creston News Advertiser wouldn't be able to do the event at the level they do.

"He is kind of our in-house celebrity chef," said Mittag. "He is known for his cooking, and people want his recipes. So, basically, it is a nice fit."

Advanced tickets for the event are $5 and $8 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at My Sister's Place in Lenox, Fudge Town Interiors in Corning, Colors Floral and Home Decorating in Greenfield, Creston News Advertiser, Sentinel-Tribune in Osceola, Country Blossoms in Mount Ayr and Kansas Street Deli and Purple Cow Antiques in Afton.
