Robert C. Herren, 94, of Creston died Oct. 22, 2012, at Greater Regional Hospice Home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 25 and 34. The Rev. Ben Carter-Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery south of Creston. Open visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and 1 to 2 p.m. service time Saturday with family present 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Robert Charles Herren, son of Flossie Irene (Gillogly) and Charles E. Herren, was born May 12, 1918, in Macksburg.
Bob graduated from Macksburg High School in 1937.
After school, Bob moved to Miami, Fla., where he worked on the docks for Riverside Clean Up and stayed with an uncle for two years, until moving back to Iowa.
In 1940, Bob began working for the railroad on the Council Bluffs and Quincy line as a switchman.
On Feb. 17, 1945, Bob married Mary Ellen Quinn in Corning.
Bob farmed near Macksburg and worked the railroad most of his life. They lived in Creston from 1945 to 1968 then moved to Macksburg in 1968. Bob continued to work for the Burlington Northern Santé Fe Railroad as a switchman and later a brakeman.
Bob was a former member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 605 and the F.O.E. Eagles Lodge No. 1398, both of Creston, United Transportation Union and National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees.
Bob is survived his nieces, Mary Jo (husband Bob) Lowry of Urbandale, Donna (husband Dale) Standley of Council Bluffs and Betty (husband Chet) Abel of Creston; nephews, John (wife Francis) King of Creston, George (wife Sharon) King of Treynor and Gene (wife Carol) Kralik of Creston; great-niece Debbie Goble of Afton; cousin Esther Drake of Winterset; special friend Charlie Taylor of Creston; many other great-nieces and -nephews, family and many friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2006; sister Daisy Dell King and nephew Charles William “Bill” King.
