SWCC beats Grand View after Schroeder ceremony

Published: Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 11:31 a.m. CDT • Updated: Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 10:40 a.m. CDT

The night belonged to long-time Southwestern Community College volleyball coach Rita Schroeder, who had the volleyball court named after her during a pre-game ceremony Wednesday.

But a Southwestern comeback from down 2-1 in sets wasn’t a bad way to cap off the night, either.

The Spartans came out with a lot of energy in taking the first set 25-12 after the pre-game ceremony.

Grand View came back and took the next two sets from SWCC, 17-25, 22-25, though.

“This was a great match for us,” SWCC head coach Melissa Blessington said. “It started out with the ceremony for Rita Schroeder. The stands were packed and it was a very emotional time not only for her, but for our team.

“Grand View did play some great defense tonight, and came back in the second and third game.”

The Spartans bounced back to take the final two sets 25-18, 15-12 to claim the victory.

“Our girls probably did the best job all year responding to adversity in this match by coming back and winning the fourth and fifth games,” Blessington said. “We were down early in the fifth set, but I knew the girls wanted the win.”

Alex Duffy led the Spartans with 16 kills, while Ashley Strong and Mel Mangrum added to a balanced attack with 11 and nine kills, each.

Mangrum and Lily Lower each finished with four blocks.

Wednesday was also parents night for the sophomores on the team. Sophomores and their parents who were honored included Mariah Kruse, Katelyn Coyle, Caleigh Fowler and Kelsey Bregar.

The Spartans play 1 p.m Friday against Clinton and 5 p.m. against Kirkwood in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Volleyball Showcase in Marshalltown.

On Saturday, Southwestern takes on Marshalltown at 9 a.m. and Ellsworth at 1 p.m.
