Hall of Fame

Dave Carper and Steve Watson will both be inducted into the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame during halftime of the Class 3A Championship on Nov. 15 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

Harlan coach Curt Bladt will also be honored with the Walt Fiegel Coaching With Character Award, which will be presented during halftime of the Class 4A Championship on Nov. 16.

Carper spent 10 seasons coaching at Nishna Valley before spending 19 years at Clarinda.

While in Clarinda, Carper led five teams tot he playoffs, posting a combined 46-11 record. In 2002 and 2003, he led the Cardinals to the semifinals. He retired in 2009 with a cumulative career record of 163-127-2.

Watson led the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs to five district titles and qualified for the playoffs eight times. Three times, his team was eliminated by the eventual state champion.

Watson’s career record is 138-60. He is now in his 18th year as activities director. His son Tony is a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bladt will be honored with the award presented to an individual who embodies the high character, integrity, concern for kids and service to the profession that were modeled by coach Fiegel.

Bladt served as head coach of the Harlan Cyclones for 35 years, racking up a career mark of 372-43. It is the second most wins and the best winning percentage in the history of the sport. His teams qualified for 32 state playoffs, and won 11 state championships with eight runner-up finishes.
