FORT DODGE — Creston High School freshman Camryn Somers, swimming for Waukee High School, was successful in all four of her events in the state qualifying meet Saturday at Fort Dodge High School.
Somers, also a basketball player and track runner at CHS, qualified in one individual event and three relays for the Warriors at the state meet this Saturday in Marshalltown. West Des Moines Valley rolled to the team title with 525 points. Waukee was second with 423 points in the nine-team field.
Champions in each event from the six regionals across the state automatically qualify for the state meet. The rest of the field comes from the next best 18 times across the state.
Waukee sophomore Maddie Gehrke was the only individual double-winner Saturday. She won the 50 freestyle in 23.77 and the 100 butterfly in 56.71. She also swam on the Warriors’ winning 200 medley relay, which included Somers as the freestyle anchor.
Waukee swam the 200 medley in 1:59.39 for the eighth-fastest state qualifying time.
Somers also swam leadoff on Waukee’s second-place 200 freestyle relay in the 16th-fastest state qualifying time of 1:42.82.
Somers also swam leadoff on the runner-up 400 freestyle relay in 3:39.84, which ranks eighth among state qualifying teams.
Individually, Somers placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 56.08, which ranks 24th in the state field.
Somers commutes daily during the season, and frequently in the off-season, for Waukee practices and individual workouts. She is the daughter of Matt and Deb Somers of Creston.
