Final plans for the Sunday fall dinner were discussed.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Oct. 22 at the library. Jane Briley presided. Nine members answered roll call with “Our family’s claim to fame.”

Roger Nurnberg reported the newly reprinted books of Ringgold and Union county biographical sketches will arrive soon, and extras will be for sale to the public. He also brought the revised copies of the society brochure to be distributed to the public.

The nominating committee reported the following officers for 2013: Briley, president;
Nurnberg, vice president; Dorothy Eyberg, secretary; and Elaine Brown, treasurer. Election will take place at the November meeting after other nominations are accepted.

A query was received regarding the family of Perry Pembleton Brown and Christina Jane Walker Brown.

Kathy Parmenter is indexing records of old queries and responses, and putting them on CDs. She is also gathering printed information on Union County service people in all wars, to put on the society website.

Dennis Howard spoke with the group concerning his project of assembling pictures of all Creston High School graduates, years 1912-1970, from Crest yearbooks and Arrow supplements. He is seeking one missing year of 1913, and asked the help of the society and the public to find a copy. The society is also needing missing copies for the library of years 1914, 1919, 1924 and 1932.

Briley gave the program on researching records of orphans, and children placed in orphanages. Sources include institution records, census, newspaper accounts of Orphan Trains and family stories.

The Nov. 26 meeting will include finger foods, and a sharing of “my biggest find of the year.”

Rebecca Circle

Rebecca Circle met Oct. 18 at the home of Midge Scurlock with eight members present.

Pam Richie opened the meeting with the DWF prayer. There was no secretary’s report. Treasurer’s report was given with no corrections.

Old business: Rebecca circle has been asked to clean the silver that is in the front hall.

New business: The December meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 with a potluck at the home of Mary Ann Lindsay.
