OSKALOOSA — It was a successful debut by the Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team Monday with a 73-53 victory over William Penn JV.

The game was a tuneup for tonight’s home opener against North Central Missouri Community College.

Returning all-region player Marquealis Edwards had a big opening night with a game-high 32 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, three steals and only one turnover while handling the bulk of the Spartan offensive production.

“Q was 12-of-14 from inside the arc,” coach Mike Holmes said. “Probably the more impressive thing is the 13 rebounds and three assists. He did things in all phases of the game.”

Experience showed, as only three Spartans were appearing in their first collegiate game for Southwestern — guard Larry Mason and forwards Jack Harrison and Jared Theis. Mason had seven points and forced four turnovers on defense.

“Larry did a real nice job forcing some turnovers and setting up guys with good passes,” Holmes said. “Jack Harrison had some big defensive rebounds, and Jared Theis had some good (defensive) closeout challenges that forced some misses. I thought they all did a nice job.”

Point guard Delby Halcomb had seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and forced four turnovers.

Overall it was a smooth opener.

“As far as first games go, typically you don’t look very sharp, but I thought it was pretty evident that we had a lot of returners on the floor,” Holmes said. “We looked a lot more confident in things we ere doing, and only turned it over 11 times. In my five years, it’s the best we played in an opener.”
