Fresh off election, Latham focused on ‘fiscal cliff’

This map, prepared by the Iowa Legislative Services Agency, shows the current Iowa Congressional districts. Tom Latham will be representing Union County in the 3rd Congressional District.

A new congressman will represent Creston when the legislative session continues in Washington, D.C.

Republican incumbent Tom Latham defeated Democratic incumbent Leonard Boswell Nov. 6 in one of the most highly contested political races across the country. The two were pitted against each other because of redistricting as Iowa lost one of its Congressional seats.

Redistricting also put the area’s incumbent congressman Steve King into District 4, where he won Nov. 6 over challenger Christie Vilsack.

Latham, who stopped by the Creston News Advertiser office for an interview Thursday, now represents Iowa’s U.S. Congressional District 3.

“I want to thank all the voters this election, whether they voted for me or not,” Latham said. “I think we ran a campaign which compared our voting records, a campaign for less spending and less government and worked hard to get those messages out. I am very pleased with the results of this election and am proud to be representing Union County.”

Latham said the No. 1 concern when lawmakers return to Washington, D.C., is the “fiscal cliff.”

The fiscal cliff is a package of tax increases and spending cuts that takes effect in January unless Congress passes a budget deal by then. Economists suspect, if no deal is met, the economy could be hit so hard that it would likely sink into recession in the first half of 2013.

Latham said the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released information recently that unemployment by the fourth quarter of next year is expected to reach 9.1 percent in the United States unless a budget deal is reached.

“The fiscal cliff will be our focus and we must find an agreement quickly,” Latham said

Latham added he and his staff are currently searching for an office location in the 3rd Congressional District — which includes Fremont, Page, Taylor, Ringgold, Mills, Montgomery, Adams, Union, Pottawattamie, Cass, Adair, Madison, Warren, Guthrie, Dallas and Polk counties.

Latham said putting an office in Creston is a possibility and he will make a announcement about office locations and his staff when a final decisions is reached.
