Bancroft History Assembly
Bancroft History Assembly of Creston met 1:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the home of Barbara Bjorn. Eight regular members and four life members were present. The meeting was conducted by Peg Anderson. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Roll call was “For what are you most thankful?” Thoughts for the day were “what we have once enjoyed we can never lose” and “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.” The last is a quote from “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss.
Minutes for May 7, Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 were read by the secretary Marisue Lewis. The treasurer’s report and proposed budget were given by Avis Hainline. Committee reports were presented. The members were reminded that reading lists are due at the December meeting. Scholarship information is available.
It was decided to join with the Elzevir and Chautauqua clubs to carry out the “Reel In and Recycle” project.
Reporting of volunteer hours is to be limited to designated club projects. No individual hours will be accepted.
Next month’s meeting will be held Dec. 3. Mary Jones will be hostess and the program will be present by Marilyn Ralls. Bancroft History Assembly will help with domestic violence and awareness prevention project by bringing paper products for the local organization in Decemeber. Members were also encouraged to attend local music and drama presentations.
The loose change offering was received for IFWC/Iowa endowment fund.
The club collect was recited and the meeting adjourned.
Beth Perry gave a report on the life of Helen Keller.
On Oct. 1, 10 members of the assembly took a trip to Greenfield. They dined at the Olive Branch Restaurant and later toured The Warren Cultural Center.
The Book Club
The Book Club met 1:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Kelly’s Garden Cafe. The meeting was called to order with nine members and three guests. The minutes of the October meeting were read and approved.
Nancy Loudon was a guest and spoke about the proposed Lincoln renovation design of the library. Shonda Deranleau and Rita Sickels joined the club.
The program was by Carolyn Derrick on the book “Driving Mr. Yogi” by Harvey Aration.
The next meeting will be 12:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Pat Pokorny’s. It will be a Christmas luncheon. Everyone bring a salad. You may bring a used book to exchange.
P.E.O. Chapter AZ
The regular business meeting of P.E.O. Chapter AZ was held Nov. 7 at Van Gelder Clothing with Judy Woods and Chris Van Gelder as hostesses. The meeting was conducted by President Karla Hynes. Twenty-three members were present.
Sandy McNichols recognized Margaret Weisshaar’s 101st birthday and members should send cards.
Hynes moved that the chapter sponsor Emma Johnson, as she applies for the P.E.O. Star Scholarship. Christy Whited seconded the motion, and the voice vote was pro. Johnson’s great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and sister are P.E.O. members.
Sharon Bennett gave the program on projects. Through P.E.O. projects, millions of dollars are avaiable to women to continue their educations.
The next regular meeting will be Dec. 4 at Salem Lutheran Church.
Kent Dinner Club
Kent Dinner Club met Nov. 8 with 10 attending to visit and catch up with each other.
The next meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at Creston Family Restaurant.
Beta Sigma Phi
Alpha Sigma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Nov.8 at The Pizza Ranch with spouses and friends. Seventeen attended the supper.
Bev Miller presided at the business meeting with all members present. Plans were made to provide a gift basket to a local family in December. A vote was taken for the honor of “Christmas Angel.” A donation to the Creston Christmas basket was approved.
Marilyn Larimore will host the 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 meeting.
Greater Regional Medical Center Auxiliary
Greater Regional Medical Center Auxiliary met Nov. 12 at the D.V. Richardson Room with 10 members and Annette Rice present. Cindy Cochran conducted the meeting.
Monte Neitzel gave an administrator’s report.
There are two new gift shop volunteers. Information guide training will be held January 2013 for new volunteers. More information guides are needed, so If interested, call volunteer services at 782-3553.
Several members reported on the IHA meeting held Oct. 11 in Des Moines.
The gift shop will be closed Monday with Christmas opening Tuesday.
A book sale was held Oct. 25 and netted $1,000.
There will be a winter apparel sale Dec. 5 in the D.V. Richardson Room. This is open to the public.
There will be a jewelry sale Dec. 13 in the MAP Conference Room.
A bloodmobile was held Nov. 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church hall and 98 units exceeded the goal of 94. The next bloodmobile will be Feb. 25.
The next meeting will be Dec. 12 at Annette Rice’s home for a brunch and meeting.
Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was 12:05 p.m. at The Windrow with 21 members and one guest. Brad Lorenzen president, presided. Korina Loudon gave the prayer, and Craig Mittag was finemaster.
The program was Chuck Scott, interim superintendent of Creston Community Schools. He gave the club his thoughts on the status and progress of the school system from his early observations and also gave a timetable the school board is using in finding a permanent superintendent.
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday.
Canasta winners were Marilyn Larimore, first; Gwen Sandeman, second; and Barb Bills, third.
Maxine May won the door prize.
Darlene Rutherford will host cards and chatter Nov. 28.
