MOUNT AYR — Creston and Mount Ayr each won its opening-round match in the Raiderette Tipoff Tourney on Monday, and advance to tonight’s final where the two teams will meet each other at 7:30.

Creston knocked off Lamoni 57-15, while Mount Ayr defeated Orient-Macksburg 55-15.

The Panthers took care of business early, holding an 18-2 lead over the Lady Demons at the end of the first quarter.

Senior Brianna Maitlen scored nine of her 15 points in the first quarter. She also finished with a team-high 12 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.

“I thought we played all right,” head coach Larry McNutt said. “We still have a lot of things we need to work on. It was good to play somebody you could make some mistakes against and still win. We got to put some pressure on them, and got some easy baskets. We’re going to have to do that this year, because we’re not the greatest shooters in the world, and we’re going to have to create some offense by playing defense.”

Creston totaled 17 steals on the night, as Lamoni turned the ball over 25 times. Maitlen finished with five steals while Chelcee Downing and Sadie Jones each had three.

Downing and freshman Jenna Taylor contributed eight points each, while Zaidy Frank and Natalie Mostek each added five rebounds.

Maitlen was named Creston’s player of the game, while Kyra Stevenson earned that honor for Lamoni.
