TRENTON, Mo. — The Southwestern Community College women’s basketball team came home with a 71-53 loss to North Central Missouri College here on Tuesday.

The Spartans committed 11 first-half turnovers while shooting just 25 percent from the field, as the Lady Pirates took a commanding 41-19 lead into halftime.

“The tale of two halves that has plagued us all year reared itself again tonight,” head coach Brett Gilcrist said. “I really liked our energy during pregame and felt confident we would be ready to play. Sadly, it took less than three minutes for me to see that we were going to struggle yet again to limit our turnovers, make open shots and rebound the basketball on the defensive end.”

The Lady Pirates took advantage of 18 second-chance points in the first half.

Southwestern rebounded in the second half to shoot 38 percent for the half, and committed just six turnovers, but it was too little, too late.

Sophomore Jamee Miner of Elkhorn, Neb., led the Spartans with 13 points, five steals and four rebounds. Freshman Darian Polson collected eight points and freshman Morgan Knorr pulled down six rebounds. Freshman Jaraylia Knight of Pontiac, Mich., led the team with four assists.

“We know we are capable of playing with anyone, but only if we take care of the ball and play to our strengths on both the offensive and defensive ends,” Gilcrist said. “Too often we are allowing teams to dictate how we will play. We need to set the tone from the start and look to be the more aggressive team.”

The Spartans travel to Great Bend, Kan., today to play in the Barton Classic. Southwestern faces host Barton Community College tonight before playing Brown Mackie Saturday afternoon.
