At about 8 a.m. Friday, the mood was playful in the Creston High School wrestling room, as athletes milled about during the team’s annual photo session.

There was some ornery teasing among the wrestlers, enjoying some rare “down” time from heavy preseason workouts.

Things were upbeat because this 2012-13 edition of Panther wrestling should again contend for state dual competition, and offer some excitement at the traditional state tournament, where three wrestlers competed in last year’s Saturday night finals.

Heading the excitement is senior 138-pounder Jake Marlin. He and Denver-Tripoli’s Brandon Sorenson, subjects of a documentary by Ohio filmmaker Tim Jackson, are on a quest to become the state’s 22nd and 23rd four-time champions at this year’s tourney.

Tragic news

But two hours after Friday’s workout began, the team’s emotions took a turn. Head coach Darrell Frain had just received word that two squad members had been involved in a tragic auto accident earlier that morning, which claimed the life of sophomore 220-pounder Dalton Hribal.

The driver, junior 138-pounder Skylar Cook, received minor injuries and was able to rejoin the squad for Sunday’s practice.

It was jolting news. Immediately emotional for some, while others sat silently in shock, already exhausted from practice.

“It’s definitely an emotional time, no doubt about it,” said Frain, now charged with the task of leading the healing process for a close-knit squad preparing for Tuesday’s opener at Interstate 35 of Truro. The Panthers face I-35 and Nodaway Valley, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The next day, the team gathers for Hribal’s services at 2 p.m. at Creston High School.

Frain said it’s a team that not only has to be rebuilt emotionally, but even before the accident, he knew some big holes were left to fill for heavyweight state champion Collin Bevins, fifth-place 145-pounder Juwan Parrish, and state qualifiers Zac Goodrich (126 pounds) and David Thompson (152).

The Panthers were fourth in both the state dual tourney and traditional tournament with 90.5 points.

Creston/O-M trailed a tight field at the top as Denver-Tripoli claimed the 2A title with 126 points. Davenport Assumption edged West Delaware for second, 119.5 to 119.
