BARTON, Kan. — Southwestern Community College’s women’s basketball team held early leads in both of its games at the Barton Classic here over the weekend, but let both leads slip away into losses.
The Spartans fall to 0-8 for the season.
Southwestern tipped off action Friday night against host school Barton Community College, losing by a 60-43 tally.
The Spartans grabbed an early eight-point lead, but turnovers on the offensive end quickly mounted, and the Spartans trailed 32-25 at halftime.
Southwestern began climbing back into the game in the second half, but two missed free throws with 9:47 to go in a seven-point game turned into a transition 3-pointer for Barton at the other end, ending the Spartan threat.
Sophomore Jamee Miner led the Spartans with 12 points and added five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Morgan Knorr of Savannah, Mo., added eight points and sophomore Brittany Clark of Omaha scored seven points.
Freshman Darian Polson of Des Moines led the team with eight rebounds, and sophomore Kaley Folkerts of Bedford recorded a team-high three assists in the loss.
The Spartans had a quick turnaround with a Saturday afternoon game against Brown Mackie College.
Once again, Southwestern held an early lead before entering the halftime break trailing 39-32.
Turnovers, along with strong offensive rebounding by Brown Mackie College blew the game open, as Brown Mackie prevailed with an 84-59 victory.
Freshman Kourtni Stumpf of Johnston led the Spartans with nine points, while freshman Miranda Williams of Orrick, Mo., contributed eight points and five rebounds. Freshman Alycia Raney added seven points.
Knorr pulled down six rebounds and a team-high four assists in the loss, while Miner recorded a team-high four steals.
“No one likes to lose, especially me, but I could not be happier with how our girls played this weekend,” head coach Brett Gilcrist said. “For the first time all year, we began to show a sense of consistency and growth as a team. We are starting to play to our strengths and I really feel like we are developing confidence despite these early setbacks.
“More importantly, for the first time all season, we got production throughout our lineup,” Gilcrist continued. “I believe we are improving each and every day and that is especially important as we talk about the need to be playing our best basketball when conference season starts in just over two weeks.”
Southwestern returns to action Friday at Missouri Valley College against the junior varsity team, and again Saturday at Cottey College.
