Frances Schafer Greene

Frances S. Schafer, 93, of Greene died Nov. 27, 2012, at Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. The Rev. Gary Hatcher will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be one hour before services Saturday at the church. Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Frances S. Schafer Memorial Fund, 202 Park Drive, Charles City, IA 50616.

Frances Sophia O’Brien, daughter of Dora (Drogemuller) and George O’Brien, was born Feb. 6, 1919, at home in rural Vilmar, Butler County.

Frances received her education in public schools and graduated from Greene High School. She earned her teaching certificate and taught in country schools, east of Greene, from 1937-1946.

On March 21, 1943, Frances married Ivan D. Schafer at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

She worked side by side with Ivan caring for the family farm.

Frances was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Vilmar Feb. 11, 1919. She was confirmed June 4, 1933, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene and has remained a member since. She taught Sunday school, belonged to the women’s circle and quilted.

Frances is survived by her children, Donn (Cherie) Schafer of Charles City, Phillip (Kathy) Schafer of Charles City, James (Linda) Schafer of Greene and Joan (Don) Gordon of Creston; daughter-in-law Christine (husband Mark) Jellum of Osage; grandchildren, Andrew (Jennifer) Schafer, Matthew (Jennifer) Schafer, Trula Schafer, Jeffery (K.T.) Schafer, Joshua (Kristina) Schafer, Amy Valladares, Brian (Jodi) Schafer, Todd Schafer, Holly Schafer, Chad Schafer, Lisa (John) Carpenter, Dana Gordon and Will Gordon; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Fontell (Joe) Deines of Cordova, Ill., and Georgeann (Lloyd) Kingery of Royal, Ill.; brother John (Diane) O’Brien of Rockford, Ill.; many nieces and nephews.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; son Gary; parents and sister Alberta (James) Dolan.
