Union County Genealogical Society
Union County Genealogical Society met Nov. 26 at the library in Creston. Jane Briley presided. Officers elected for 2013 are Briley, president; Roger Nurnberg, vice president; Dorothy Eyberg, secretary; and Elaine Brown, treasurer.
Brown reported 50 copies of the newly-reprinted book, “Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Union Counties, Iowa, 1887,” were recently received and are available for purchase at the library. Eyberg reported obituary books of 2002 and 2010, containing obits from the Creston News Advertiser and Afton Star Enterprise, are now on the reference shelf.
Nurnberg reported on the pros and cons of offering PayPal. This was tabled.
Nine members answered roll call by telling of a “find” in their genealogical research this year.
Diane Ide showed a book that she recently compiled on one branch of her family tree.
Refreshments were shared by all.
There is no December meeting.
Officers will meet Dec. 27 for planning.
The next meeting is Jan. 28 at the library.
Crest Area for Life
Crest Area for Life met Nov. 27 at Holy Spirit hall. President Betty Baker opened the meeting with the right to life prayer. Eight members were in attendance.
Terry Madison read the secretary’s report from October. It was approved.
Pat Pokorny read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved.
Betty Baker sent out 11 congratulatory letters and one sympathy card.
Under old business, Terry Madison will contact Hanson directory about ads in the phone book.
Rich and Terry Madison gave a report on the open house Nov. 17 at LifeCare Pregnancy Center.
Under new business, members discussed the upcoming Memorial Service 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Catholic cemetery. Betty Baker will send out letters to pastors.
It was decided to send donations to the Christmas basket fund and LifeCare Pregnancy Center in Stuart.
The next meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Holy Spirit hall.
Rich Madison made a motion, seconded by Meg Crawford to adjourn. It was approved.
The Book Club
The Book Club met Dec. 3 at Pat Pokorny’s with a soup, salad and dessert luncheon. Ten members were present with one guest, Marcia Hundley.
The secretary report was read and approved.
Roll call was answered with “your favorite Christmas memory.”
There was a book exchange for Christmas.
The members shared Christmas literature.
There will be no January meeting. The next meeting will be Feb. 4. Barb Thomsen will be hostess and Carolyn Hubatka will have the program.
Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 22 members and three guests. Brad Lorenzen, president, presided. Karen Norton gave the prayer, and Mike Linch was finemaster.
The program was Annette and Rick Rice who told about their trip to Patagonia, South America, and presented a slide show of the nature, architecture and people.
TOPS 1338
TOPS 1338 met 5:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at First United Methodist Church. Seven members weighed in. Best loser of the week was Alice Brown and the runner-up was an anonymous member. The best loser for the month was Shellie Sullivan and runner-up was Marisue Lewis.
Squares was won by Lola Baucom and fines went to Anna Thompson.
The Red Can Challenge is to eat leafy green vegetables.
The meeting closed with the TOPS pledge.
TOPS 1338 met Monday at the Methodist Church with nine members answering roll call. Best loser for the week was Monica Belew, and Lola Baucom was runner-up.
Diana Loomis presided over the business meeting which opened with the TOPS pledge.
Minutes were read from the previous meeting by the secretary.
Squares was won by Baucom and fines went to the treasurery.
The Red Can Challenge is to “Smile all day tomorrow. It will make people wonder what you’ve been up to.”
Jane King read a humorous article, “Dealing with Public Restrooms.”
Carol Sheldahl is to have the program for next week.
The meeting adjourned with the rectitation of the TOPS closing pledge.

Bancroft History Assembly
Bancroft History Assembly of Creston met Monday at the D.V. Richardson Room at Greater Regional Medical Center. Twelve regular members and four lifetime members were present. The meeting was called to order by Peg Anderson. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
The inspirational thought was from John Wooden, “You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”
Roll call was answered by naming one’s favorite Christmas carol. The secretary’s report for November was read by Marisue Lewis. The treasurer’s report was given by Avis Hainline. Twenty-five dollars is to be given toward the Creston Christmas Basket project.
Beth Perry read an email encouraging the club to find new members. Kay Raymond and Joan Chubick reported on attending the scholarship dinner where Elizabeth Folts was the recipient of the Federated Clubs scholarship. A letter was read thanking the clubs for the help given to her.
Reading lists for 2012 were submitted by the members.
The guidelines for reporting volunteer hours was reread. It was voted to accept these.
As new business, Bancroft has chosen to invite the district director to attend a meeting later in the spring. Members brought paper products to be given to the Rural Iowa Crisis Center. It was decided to bring items for baby use for the January meeting. These will be given to RICC also.
Federation news encouraged members to support GFWC volunteer programs by buying from Amazon at www.GFWC.org. Fifteen percent of purchases will be directed toward the Federation. The business session adjourned with the recitation of the club collect.
Marilyn Ralls gave a report on the life of Betsy Ross. She is credited for sewing the first official flag of the United States.
The next meeting will be Jan. 21 with Ralls as hostess.
