Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Nov. 26 at the library in Creston. Jane Briley presided. Officers elected for 2013 are Briley, president; Roger Nurnberg, vice president; Dorothy Eyberg, secretary; and Elaine Brown, treasurer.

Brown reported 50 copies of the newly-reprinted book, “Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Union Counties, Iowa, 1887,” were recently received and are available for purchase at the library. Eyberg reported obituary books of 2002 and 2010, containing obits from the Creston News Advertiser and Afton Star Enterprise, are now on the reference shelf.

Nurnberg reported on the pros and cons of offering PayPal. This was tabled.

Nine members answered roll call by telling of a “find” in their genealogical research this year.

Diane Ide showed a book that she recently compiled on one branch of her family tree.

Refreshments were shared by all.

There is no December meeting.

Officers will meet Dec. 27 for planning.

The next meeting is Jan. 28 at the library.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met Nov. 27 at Holy Spirit hall. President Betty Baker opened the meeting with the right to life prayer. Eight members were in attendance.

Terry Madison read the secretary’s report from October. It was approved.

Pat Pokorny read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved.

Betty Baker sent out 11 congratulatory letters and one sympathy card.

Under old business, Terry Madison will contact Hanson directory about ads in the phone book.

Rich and Terry Madison gave a report on the open house Nov. 17 at LifeCare Pregnancy Center.

Under new business, members discussed the upcoming Memorial Service 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Catholic cemetery. Betty Baker will send out letters to pastors.

It was decided to send donations to the Christmas basket fund and LifeCare Pregnancy Center in Stuart.

The next meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Holy Spirit hall.

Rich Madison made a motion, seconded by Meg Crawford to adjourn. It was approved.

The Book Club

The Book Club met Dec. 3 at Pat Pokorny’s with a soup, salad and dessert luncheon. Ten members were present with one guest, Marcia Hundley.
