MURRAY — The seventh-ranked Murray boys raced to a 35-9 lead in the first eight minutes on the way to a dominant home victory Tuesday.
Austin Halls was 7-of-9 on 3-pointers and finished with 33 points, nine assists and five steals for the Mustangs (4-0). Sam Rockhold had 10 points and four rebounds. Eddie Otto finished with eight points and four rebounds. Pat Kilmer had six blocks while scoring seven points, and Cody Scroggie handed out five assists in a seven-point night. Seth Nerness had six points and three steals.
In all, Murray had 19 assists on 31 total field goals. Clay Wetterling scored eight points for Melcher-Dallas (1-2), and Chase Wetterling had seven.
“We came out playing really well, scoring 35 points in the first quarter, and never looked back,” said Mustang coach Darin Wookey. “It was a complete effort by everybody. We need to continue to play with that type of intensity the rest of the way.”
Bedford 71, Corning 30
CORNING — Bedford’s defensive pressure took its toll on Corning in the conference loss. The Red Raiders trailed 45-20 at halftime.
Ryan Carlson had 13 points and five rebounds for the Red Raiders. Keegan Longabaugh had six points and five rebounds. Lance Swartz finished with five points and six rebounds. Nick Spring had a team-high eight rebounds while scoring two points. Lane Peterson, Blaine Williams and Spring each had two assists.
“We had a couple of kids get in foul trouble early, so we had to switch our plan defensively,” said Corning coach Pete Nett. “Their press gave us trouble, too. There are a bunch of fundamental things we’ll be working on in the next couple of days.”
Bedford scoring leaders were not available.
Nodaway Valley 86, Lenox 9
GREENFIELD — Lenox was shut out in the first and third quarters of the lopsided Pride of Iowa Conference encounter.
Top-ranked Nodaway Valley led 51-5 at halftime.
“Another great start, great defense for 32 minutes,” NV coach Darrell Burmeister said.
Alex had a big overall game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Brad Baudler turned ina team-high 19 points with five assists. T.J. Bower had 11 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Zach Plymesser totaled 14 points and four steals.
Also, Dan Ehrsam finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals for the Wolverines, now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Pride of Iowa.
Nodaway Valley had a 45-10 rebounding advantage and forced 21 turnovers as the starters had less that three full quarters on the court, Burmeister said.
Caleb Lange had five points for Lenox. Chase Mayens and Mason Peterson each had two points.
