MOUNT AYR — A 20-2 second quarter fueled Mount Ayr to a 35-30 win over East Union here on Tuesday, as East Union’s comeback attempt fell short.

Ashton Johnston led the Raiderettes with nine points and Paige Daughton added eight points and 11 rebounds. Logan Wimer contributed six points for Mount Ayr, now 3-2 for the season.

Taylor Still pulled down seven rebounds to go with four points and five steals. Johnston also picked up five steals to go with four assists.

“Our defense is outstanding, but we are failing to put games away at the end,” Mount Ayr head coach Thad Streit said. “We have to find ways to score.”

Kelsey Hoff led the Eagles with 17 points and six rebounds, shooting 7-of-11 from the field. Rochelle Means added six points and six rebounds. Dusti Carlisle finished with three assists and four steals for East Union, now 1-3.

“We played solid basketball for three quarters of this ballgame, and in face, outscored them in the first, third and fourth by a total of 13 points,” East Union head coach Matt Delger said. “Our effort and fight back into the game was fantastic, but it was just not quite enough because of the whole we dug in the second quarter.”

Paton-Churdan 45, Orient-Macks. 23

CHURDAN — Paton-Churdan pulled away from Orient-Macksburg for a 45-23 win over the Bulldogs here on Tuesday.

Morgan James led the Bulldogs with seven points, while Shannon Eads contributed six points.

Gabby Jenkins and Shyla Waldhauser each scored four points, and Courtney Neal finished with two.

Jenkins also finished with seven rebounds, six blocks, three steals and two assists. James finished with three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Eads added three rebounds and two steals.

“We showed improvement defensively tonight, but had shortcomings offensively,” head coach Kelli Goodale said. “Our shots weren’t falling, and turnovers really hurt us. We were hurting in the post position, since Chandy Waldhauser is recovering from a knee injury from last Friday, and Gabby and Shannon had foul trouble.”

Marissa Minnehan led Paton-Churdan with 12 points.
