Turnovers cost Spartan women
COUNCIL BLUFFS — Iowa Western Community College, ranked No. 5 in the nation in Division I, pulled away from Southwestern Community College late in the first half here Wednesday, on its way to an 82-29 win over the Spartan women.
The Spartans kept the Reivers’ lead within single digits for much of the first half before turnovers derailed Southwestern.
Iowa Western Community College forced 21 first-half turnovers, converting eight of those turnovers into 16 transition points.
Southwestern trailed 35-14 at the half, despite holding the Reivers to 34 percent shooting for the half.
Iowa Western came out more aggressive in the second half, forcing nine more turnovers and collecting double-digit offensive rebounds in the half, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
Southwestern freshman forward Darian Polson of Des Moines led the Spartans with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, while tying for the team-lead in rebounds with six. Freshman Jaraylia Knight also collected six boards, while leading the team with three assists.
“Overall, I was actually fairly happy with how we played tonight, except for our continued struggles with ball possession,” head coach Brett Gilcrist said. “If you turn the ball over 30 times, you will always lose, especially when you are playing the No. 5 team in the country.”
The Spartans open the conference season at home on Tuesday, taking on Iowa Lakes Community College at 5:30 p.m., before traveling to Wichita, Kan., on Wednesday and Thursday.
