5 Panthers win titles at Central Decatur

LEON — Creston/O-M and Albia didn’t match up in many title matches as a preview for next February’s district tournament, but both teams took home most of the gold from the Central Decatur Invitational Friday night.
Just one night after a pair of big Hawkeye 10 dual wins over Atlantic and Clarinda, the Panthers and Albia each crowned five champions. However, the only head-to-head meeting in the finals occurred at 120 pounds, where Albia’s Shadow Leshen topped Kruz Adamson, 11-3.
Creston/O-M outscored the Blue Demons for the team title, 238.5 to 167.5. Chariton was third with 138.
“We thought maybe we’d get some matchups with Albia,” Panther coach Darrell Frain said. “But their good kids were not at the same weights. Their lighter weights were moving around some, and they have a good 160-pounder that would be a good matchup for us if we moved Trevor (Frain). We just had more depth than everyone else.”
Nine Panther wrestlers finished in the top three. And, that’s without regular 126-pounder Spencer Wray, who did not make weight Friday.
Panther champs
Trevor Frain, at 170 pounds, was one of five Panther title winners. The others were Wyatt Thompson (113), Jake Marlin (145), Keaton Hulett (195) and Cole Tanner (220).
Albia claimed championships at 120, 132, 138, 152 and 160. At tournament time, it’s highly possible Marlin would be at 138 pounds and Frain at 160. Several others are in the mix at 145, 152 and 170.
Going into next weekend’s Kansas City Classic, Frain said some of those issues may begin to get sorted out.
“We have wrestle-offs coming up for several positions,” Frain said. “A lot of kids are close and hoping to get certain positions.”
Before that, the Panthers are at home Tuesday in Hawkeye 10 action against Glenwood.
Raider winner
Mount Ayr, meanwhile, had a good showing Friday with 109 points in seventh place and four finalists, including heavyweight champion Joe Ricker. Placing second for the Raiders were Dawson Knapp (113), Erik Freed (138) and Shane Swank (152).
The only champions not from Creston/O-M, Albia or Mount Ayr were Red Oak’s Tanner Mertz (103), Tristan Clark of Prairie City-Monroe at 126 and Chariton freshman Carter Isley at 182.
The Panthers’ rated trio of Marlin (first), Hulett (first) and Frain (fourth) were not tested.
Frain got an early lead on Davis County’s Logan Boas in a 5-2 finals victory. The previous week, Boas had gone into sudden-death overtime with Albia’s 160-pound champion, Brent Leshen, ranked No. 3 in the state just ahead of Frain.
“Trevor got ahead and controlled the pace with more leg attacks,” coach Frain said.
Hulett spent little time on the mat, gaining a bye, then winning by falls in 1:08 and :28. Likewise, Marlin won by three falls, including a 12-second decking of Davis County’s Kale Baird in the finals.
“Next weekend will be great for Keaton and Jake, because they’ll see guys they just don’t see during the (Iowa) season,” Frain said.
Thompson took the victory stand at 113 as the No. 3 seed, besting Red Oak’s Dakota Perry, 4-2, in a tough semifinal match before pinning Mount Ayr’s Knapp in the final.
Adamson had a strong showing for the Panthers at 120, earning two pins on the way to the finals, where he battled Leshen in a major decision loss.
“Leshen is one of the best in the state, so that was a tough match in the finals,” Frain said. “Kruz felt a lot better about how he wrestled compared to Thursday night.”
Freshmen battle
Seth Maitlen took second in a battle of freshmen in the 182-pound finals. Chariton’s Isley won in a 38-second fall. Maitlen had a fall and 7-0 decision in his first two matches.
“Those are two really good freshmen. Seth looked real good for the night,” Frain said. “He faced a senior from Red Oak in the semis and controlled that match.”
Adam Baker lost 11-1 to the third-ranked Leshen in the semifinals and then won two shutout decision in the consolations to claim third at 160.
Likewise, Gavin Leith lost a 2-1 semifinal match to Swank at 152 and then handled all challenges in the consolation rounds, taking third.
Heavyeight Nate Robinson also placed third. He suffered a third-period fall in the semifinals, then won by two falls.
“Nate was tied 0-0 after two periods of his semifinal match, then took down to start the third and got turned,” Frain said. “He controlled all of his other matches.”
Other Panther placewinners were Joey Huntington fifth at 138, Gage Cheers fifth at 132 and Stone Hammons sixth at 106.
