COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Iowa Western men won their school-record 13th straight game Saturday, but not before Southwestern put up a good fight.

The Spartans (4-6) led 21-13 at halftime over the undefeated Reivers, who gained control with a 38-point second half.

“We had a poor shooting performance,” said Iowa Western coach Jim Morris. “We shot only 23 percent from the floor for the first half and we will have to better that to win our games. It was a lucky win.”

Southwestern sophomore Devin Kastrup had 12 points against the No. 7 (Division I) Reivers, and a strong defensive effort along with seven rebounds. Guard Delby Halcomb added 10 points and a team-high three steals.

“We played very well,” SWCC coach Mike Holmes said. “We executed our game plan and controlled the tempo in the first half. We gave ourselves a chance to win. But, we never really shot it very well, and to upset somebody like that, you have to shoot it.”

Southwestern was 0-of-18 from 3-point range and shot 34.7 percent overall from the field.

The key stretch occurred with about 2:30 to play and Southwestern trailing by six.

“They missed a free throw, got the rebound, we fouled them again and they made another free throw,” Holmes said. “We fouled them again on the offensive rebound, and now they’re up nine. We block out there and we have a chance to cut it to four.”

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday the Spartans open the conference season in a home game against Iowa Lakes Community College (6-3).
