The Adair County Sheriff’s office is reporting a series of mail thefts throughout the county.
“So far we have had 30 to 40 instances,” said Adams County Sheriff Brad Newton.
“It appears they are taking the mail from the boxes, then sorting through it as they drive away, looking for holiday-type mail such as cash and gift cards,” said Newton. “They throw the things they don’t want out the window, such as bills.”
Currently there are no suspects but one victim did follow alleged mail thieves.
“The individual reported following a mid-sized white car with what he described as two younger white males in the vehicle,” said Newton.
Newton said the vague description will make finding the suspect difficult.
Newton said there is no way to prevent mail theft, but suggests intercept your mail as soon as possible to avoid becoming a victim of mail theft.
“If you see a strange vehicle pulled up to someone’s mailbox or your mailbox, call us. Try to get a license number. That would help us more than anything,” said Newton.
