Southwestern men got off to a good start in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference race with a 51-43 home victory over Iowa Lakes Tuesday night.

The Spartans led 23-16 in a trademark “grinding” first half, coach Mike Holmes said.

“We jumped out to a 9-2 lead, which they trimmed pretty quick,” Holmes said. “We kept it at seven at half. We were possessing it long, grinding it out, and the tempo was favoring us. They are a very good team, but they were having trouble getting into a rhythm.”

Southwestern stretched the lead to 20 points briefly in the second half, but the Lakers again fought back and cut it to four (38-34) with six minutes to go.

“We had a huge three from Marcus Littleton with just over two minutes left to put us up five,” Holmes said. “Then Marquealis Edwards made two free throws and Patrick Wright made one. Delby Halcomb iced it at the line.”

The Spartans were 8-of-10 on free throws and four different Spartans made a 3-pointer, including Devin Kastrup, who finished with a team-high 15 points. Edwards added 14 points.

“Devin has been solid on both ends of the floor for two straight games,” Holmes said. “Defensively, he’s stopping dribble penetration and not allowing anybody to get to the rim. He’s scoring a little and rebounding for us. Marquealis is finding people with assists in addition to scoring.”

Josh Schaben, 6-8 sophomore center from Harlan, scored four points for the Lakers, now 6-4 and 1-1.

The Spartans, now 5-6 overall and 1-0 in league play, close the pre-holiday portion of the schedule with a home game at 3 p.m. Saturday against Southeast Nebraska.
