The Southwestern Community College women’s basketball tam battled back from an 11-point deficit, but fell to Iowa Lakes Community College here on Tuesday in the conference opener, losing 60-55.

Both teams got out to good offensive starts, but midway through the first half, the Lakers put together a run stretching their lead to 11 points.

Southwestern was able to cut the lead to five points, but Iowa Lakes hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to take an eight-point lead into the halftime break.

The Spartans came out in a man-to-man defense in the second half, and tied the game at 51-51 with just over 3:00 remaining in the game.

But, the Lakers took advantage of untimely Spartan turnovers and missed free throws to close out the game on a 9-4 run.

“I thought we played extremely well tonight, especially on the offensive side of the floor,” head coach Brett Gilcrist said. “We just failed to make plays in crunch time, and some early mistakes came back to bite us. We are still struggling to find success in terms of winning, but I like the fight our girls are demonstrating, and I remain hopeful that we will continue to seek the consistency we have been preaching about all season.”

Freshman forward Darian Polson of Des Moines led the Spartans with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while sophomore Jamee Miner and freshman Morgan Knorr both finished in double figures with 15 and 12, respectively. Knorr added seven assists. Mine led the team with four steals.
