VFW Post 1797
VFW Post 1797 met Dec. 11 at the Elks Lodge in Creston. Twenty-four members and guests were present for dinner.
Commander Gary O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 a.m. with 16 members present.
Service officers report was hospital 51 hours, Christmas basket two hours, Honor Guard 18 hours, Christmas parade 18 hours and community service six hours for a total of 83 hours. Bob Jungst gave a report on Creston Post activities for 2012. The post was involved in 23 funerals, five parades, putting up flags in Creston three times and two bloodmibiles.
In old business, there are still calenders to sell.
In new business, Veterans on the Hill will be Jan. 23 at the capitol in Des Moines.
A new sign is needed at the VFW ballfield. A committee will look into the cost and report back next meeting.
Gary O’Daniels gave a report on district and state VFW. The next district meeting will be Jan. 5 in Albia.
The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Jan. 8 at the Elks Lodge with 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. meeting. All veterans are encouraged to attend.
TOPS 1338
TOPS 1338 met 5 p.m. Dec. 10 with eight members weighing in. Anna Thompson was the best loser for the week. Carol Sheldahl and Marisue Lewis tied for runner-up.
The business meeting was opened by Diana Loomis and all members reciting the TOPS pledge.
In new business, it was decided there will be no meeting Dec. 24 and only a weigh in if desired for Dec. 31. Minutes were read by the secretary, and the financial report was given by the treasurer. Members were asked to bring nonperishable food items to be given to MATURA for the food bank. There will be a new contest announced in January. Squares was won by Alice Brown and fines went to the treasury.
The program was given by Sheldahl on the “Weight-loss Nutrient You’re Not Eating.” It dealt with the benefits of fiber. She also proveded a sample of a fiber-rich cracker with guacomole salsa and avocado hummus for all to taste.
The Red Can Challenge is to eat meals at the table for three days.
Lola Baucom is to have the program next week. The meeting adjourned with the closing TOPS pledge.
Eight members were in attendance at TOPS 1338 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17. The weekly best loser was Marisue Lewis and runner-up was Neoma Davis. The business meeting opened with the TOPS pledge. Reports from the secretary and treasurer were received.
It was decided to have a March salad supper rather than a Christmas celebaration.
Squares was won by Anna Thompson and fines went to Lewis. There will be only a weigh in but no regular meeting Dec. 31.
The Red Can Challenge is to have an egg as a good source of vitamin A this week.
Diana Loomis read an article titled “Sneaky Supermarket Traps.”
The topic for Jan. 7 will be given by Monica Belew.
TOPS 1338 would like to have anyone with New Year’s resolutions to lose weight to join the support group 5 p.m. Mondays at the First United Methodist Church.
Mary Circle
Mary Circle of First Christian Church met Dec. 21 at the home of Margaret Wilkins. Ten members were present.
President Pat Fils called the meeting to order with the Disciple Women prayer.
Secretary and treasurer’s reports were read and approved.
Old business discussed was December bulletin delivery.
Instead of the lesson from “Bad Girls of the Bible,” hostess Margaret Wilkins read several Christmas traditions, along with why Christmas is celebrated on Dec. 25.
The meeting was adjourned. The hostess served refreshments.
The next meeting will be 2 p.m. Jan. 17 at First Christian Church with Barbara Lightner as hostess.
